April 11-13, 2010 Meeting on Control of Precision Systems

The third meeting on the Control of Precision Systems will focus on new developments in feedback control as applied to precision systems. We also encourage presentations of a tutorial nature which elaborate principles essential to achieving high performance in precision control systems.

The control of precision systems encompasses a wide range of applications in high-speed, high-accuracy manufacturing and automation. The growth of nanotechnology and nanoscale manufacturing has further raised the positioning requirements for machine designers. The performance of such systems, instruments, devices, and processes depends intimately upon the innovative application of feedback principles due to the large dynamic range of controlled variables and the sensitivity to effects which might be ignorable in conventional systems.

This conference is intended to promote a broader understanding of the principles and techniques applicable for precision control, to highlight the challenges and achievements unique to our field, to bring together specialists and practitioners from industry, government, and academia for the exchange of ideas, and to identify topics for further research. The conference schedule will include significant unstructured time to allow for technical and social interactions.

Tutorial on Industrial Motion Control

In this tutorial the students will be able to understand and refresh the main aspects in the application of motion control for precision systems. From the broad field of control theory, those fields most often used in industry will be introduced, explained, and applied. This focus will help engineers from different backgrounds to be familiar with the terminology and meaning of the most common theories.

The first part of the tutorial, presented by Prof. David Trumper, will introduce the basics of designing feedback controllers. Design focusing on meeting specifications with robust stability in the presence of disturbances will be introduced using the common language of Bode diagrams.

The second part of the tutorial, presented by Dr. Steve Ludwick, will focus on the application of feed-forward control techniques. A suitable model of the system gives the theoretical opportunity to drive the system along desired trajectories without any feedback control. In practice the models will show some deviations and thus the combination of feed-forward and feedback are needed. Steve will explain how to obtain the right models and will show what the limitations in this approach are.

In the last section, Prof. Jan van Eijk will explain how the system concept and its mechanical design may determine limitations on the performance of the controlled system. Dynamics in the system may lead to instability when the control power is increased. The same dynamics will also influence the models used for the feed-forward control. For system engineers, mechanical designers and control specialists, these influences are major issues as the required speed and accuracy of systems are increasing.

During the tutorial, live demonstrations are planned on an industrial set-up to illustrate the different aspects and the way in which industrial developers can do experiments on real systems.

The participants will refresh their backgrounds and be able to build a solid base of knowledge which will make the participation in the Topical Meeting more fruitful and enjoyable.
