ASPE 2008 Summer Topical Meeting

Needs in Precision Manufacturing: A Market Focus

August 11-12 , 2008
Lake Morey Resort, Fairlee, Vermont

Meeting Co-Chairmen:
Daniel C. Thompson,
Olympic Precision, Inc.
Byron R. Knapp,
Olympic Precision, Inc.

Technical Committee: James B. Bryan, Bryan Associates; Martin L. Culpepper, MIT; Robert D. Grejda, Corning Tropel; Robert J. Hocken, University of North Carolina - Charlotte; Eric R. Marsh, The Pennsylvania State University; Newman M. Marsilius, Moore Tool Company; Jeffrey W. Roblee, AMETEK – Precitech, Inc; Alex Sohn, North Carolina State University; Pradeep K. Subrahmanyan, RAPT Industries; John S. Taylor, Lawrence Livermore National Lab

This meeting will focus on market-driven needs in precision engineering and manufacturing. Representatives of individual market sectors (including both technology consumers and providers) will present their visions of future needs in precision engineering and precision manufacturing. The meeting program will be formatted to include both summary analyses and predictions from recognized experts in precision engineering and manufacturing (including both market needs and emerging capabilities), and small group discussions focusing on specific technology areas. Application-specific break-out sessions will include short presentations, guided discussions, and opportunities for group recommendations on future industry direction.

The ultimate goal of the Symposium is to establish and quantify market-driven needs in precision manufacturing, and, with input from expert service providers, to generate technology roadmaps that will meet industry demands. Specialists and practitioners from industry, government and academia are encouraged to attend. The meeting will be structured to allow participants to identify areas needing further research. Application areas of interest will include (but are not limited to) the application of precision engineering/manufacturing technologies to:

• Energy, Environment and Sustainability
• Defense
• Optics – Large
• Optics – Small
• Displays
• Semiconductors
• Transportation

The meeting will be held in Vermont’s “Precision Valley,” birthplace of precision manufacturing in the US. In addition to the meeting, tours of local precision-focused organizations will be included — OPI’s facility in White River Junction, the American Precision Museum in Windsor, and both AMETEK – Precitech, Inc. and Moore Nanotechnology Systems, LLC in Keene, NH.

The 2008 Summer Topical Meeting is structured with significant open time to allow for technical and social interactions. Speakers must produce a 4 to 6 page abstract for the conference PROCEEDINGS.

Registration will be limited to 75 participants

Hotel Information

Lake Morey Resort, Fairlee, VT

Set on a pristine lake surrounded by green hills, the Resort provides a beautiful natural setting yet still offers all the best features of any full-service resort. The list of activities starts with our 18 holes of championship golf on one side of the hotel, and a beautiful lake on the other. At night you'll hear the call of the loons across the lake and feel like you can reach out and touch the stars--all without having to "rough it."

The only thing that could compete with the beautiful lake views from our main dining room is the creative new American cuisine from the chef. As the sun sets between the hills and its final rays glint off the lake, diners enjoy meals crafted with care from the freshest ingredients, highlighting local Vermont produce when in season in a comfortably formal environment.

On the second floor of the Resort the Steamboat Lounge also offers a wonderful view of the lake. After dining, feel free to enjoy some of Vermont's finest entertainment. The lounge offers both a spacious area for dancing as well as cozy candle-lit tables. From blues to jazz to good ol' rock & roll, there will be a great selection of performers to make the evening enjoyable.

Guests at Lake Morey Resort have a choice of 130 recently renovated rooms and suites, all within a hundred feet of the Lake. Over half of these choices feature stunning views of the water, and many have private balconies. Rooms on the southern side of the Inn overlook the tranquil courtyard, gardens, and the putting green next to the golf course. There are many large rooms ideal for families in addition to special suites. Almost every room at Lake Morey is unique.
