Conference Chair: Hans-Jochen Trost, MicroFab Technologies, Inc. The 2008 American Society for Precision Engineering Annual Meeting will include the 12th International Conference on Precision Engineering (ICPE), organized in collaboration with the Japan Society for Precision Engineering and the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology. It will provide a forum for presentation and discussion of the latest technical information and achievements in precision engineering. The meeting will introduce new concepts, processes, equipment, and products, as well as highlight recent advances in precision measurement, design, control, and fabrication. The program includes a series of oral presentations and poster paper presentations, tutorials on precision engineering topics, exhibits displaying state-of-the-art in precision engineering products, a commercial session for industrial presentations, social events, and tours of local precision engineering facilities.
Perhaps the most important meeting ever held in the state of Oregon was on November 24, 1805, when the explorers Meriweather Lewis and William Clark, having finally reached the Pacific Ocean, debated on which side of the Columbia River to make their winter camp. They chose to Oregon side, and with that decision wrote the state of Oregon into the history books. Even though Portland has become a very dynamic city since then, other surrounding areas, however, have changed very little, such as the majestic Cascade mountain range, the towering forests, dozens of winding rivers and the magnificent shores of the Pacific Ocean. In turn Portland, (a bridge- and river-laced, very trendy, eco- and people friendly place), is regularly cited as one of the best cities in the U.S.A. Edged by both the Columbia and the Willamette rivers, it has a downtown with beautiful riverfront parks, spectacular views, and a walkable city center of major hotels, restaurants offering seasonal menus, shopping, and an active nightlife, all of which can also be reached via the region’s convenient and eco-friendly light-rail system. And yet, in not much more than 10 minutes you could be driving through the fields of Oregon’s famous pinot noir grapes, or approaching the base of towering Mount Hood. But there is also much to see within the city limits, such as the International Rose Test Garden (http://www.rosegardenstore.org), which offers beautiful landscaping and more than 500 varieties of roses. The neighboring Japanese Garden (see photographs at http://www.japanesegarden.com/photography/gallery), a beautifully tranquil oasis in the middle of the city, that offers a superb view Portland below. Also very worth a visit are the Portland Classical Chinese Garden (http://www.portlandchinesegarden.org), an authentically built Ming Dynasty style garden. Covered walkways, bridges, open colonnades, pavilions and a richly planted landscape frame Zither Lake, creating views that are never twice the same. Built by Suzhou artisans, this is another urban oasis of tranquil beauty and harmony. Other places worth visiting are the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) (http://www.omsi.edu), which not only offers very interesting and interactive exhibits, but also is the home of the U.S. Navy's last non-nuclear, fast attack submarine, the U.S.S. Blueback (SS 581), which was used in the production of the film “The Hunt for Red October.” Also of worthy of notice is the World Forestry Center (http://www.worldforestrycenter.org), which offers many interactive exhibits, including the Top of the Canopy Chair Lift (not for the faint of heart or apprehensive about heights). And if you prefer in more artistic exhibitions, be sure to visit the many art galleries that Portland has to offer (http://art-collecting.com/galleries_or_portland.htm), or check out the Portland Museum of Art (http://www.portlandartmuseum.org) and the Museum of Contemporary Craft (www.MuseumofContemporaryCraft.org). You can also take one of many self-guided Cultural Walking Tours (http://www.travelportland.com/arts_culture/cultural_tours/culture_district/culture_dis_tour.html). For additional Portland information, check their Visitors’ website at: http://www.travelportland.com For additional assorted maps of Portland and Oregon go to: http://www.travelportland.com/visitors/maps.html On-site registration will begin on Friday afternoon, October 17, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. and continue each day from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. We strongly encourage pre-registration, which will begin in late June 2008 or early July 2008. Registration forms will be available on the website at this time. Pre-registration will allow participants to take advantage of the “early bird” rate, and to avoid delays during the conference. U.S. participants can pay by company or personal check, or by credit card. Overseas participants may pay by credit card (we accept both MasterCard and VISA) or with U.S. dollars, traveler's checks, by draft on a U.S. bank, or with an international money order. If payment is made by transfer from a foreign bank, please include a copy of the transfer order. Checks should be made payable to ASPE (American Society for Precision Engineering). ASPE policy requires that all attendees including members, non-members, authors, invited speakers, and session chairpersons pay the appropriate registration fees. The registration fee includes technical sessions, refreshment breaks, lunches, reception, dinner, hospitality hours and admission to the exhibits. In addition, all full-week participants receive a copy of the Conference Proceedings on CD ROM, as well as a complimentary year 2009 ASPE membership. Proceedings books may be ordered separately and ahead of time. Two full days of tutorials are being held on Sunday and Monday, October 19 and 20. Tutorial fees will be charged separately.
