US Standards and Applications The capacities to differentiate surfaces by their texture, or roughness, and to correlate texture with performance have been significantly enhanced recently by the use of scale-sensitive fractal analysis. These new capacities have important applications in quality assurance and process control and for process and product design as well as research. This course introduces the principles of scale-sensitive fractal analysis as applied to characterizing measured profiles and surfaces, using practical examples. It explains the terms and techniques in the new chapter 10 in the ANSI standard: ASME B46.1-2002 and how to use them (Surface Texture: Surface Roughness, Waviness, and Lay) "Terminology and Procedures for Evaluation of Surface Texture Using Fractal Geometry.” Attendees will learn how to apply scale-sensitive fractal analyses to evaluating surfaces and measurement systems, and to selecting the best texture characterization parameters for these evaluations. This course is intended primarily for researchers and engineers working on texture-related quality, design, processing, and measurement problems that may require more than conventional texture characterization methods. No previous experience in surface metrology is required.
