Guest Tour

Monterey Peninsula and Carmel-by-the Sea Tour

The Monterey Peninsula is one of the most beautiful meetings of land and sea in the world. A sense of history pervades the city of Monterey, California’s earliest capital. The city has been lovingly restored its historic buildings and Spanish adobes. Visit its historic landmarks, adobes, and burial grounds. See Fisherman’s Wharf, central to the city’s history, now lined with restaurants, art galleries and specialty shops, as well as Cannery Row, immortalized by John Steinbeck’s novels of Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday. Continue past the Monterey Bay Aquarium and enter the city of Pacific Grove, a charming town with an old-fashioned aura, nicknamed “Butterfly Town, USA” for its annual migration of the Monarch butterfly. The beautiful orange and black winged Monarchs arrive in October and spend the winter in Pacific Grove. Its dramatically beautiful coastline on Ocean View Boulevard is only rivaled by the graceful old Victorian homes that line the town’s streets.

On the way to Carmel enjoy the breath-taking beauty of the 17-mile Drive and Pebble Beach, home to seven spectacular golf courses. Through scenic Del Monte Forest, and past beautiful mansions and world-class golf courses. Here stands one of California’s most familiar landmarks, the remarkable Lone Cypress Tree, silhouetted against the Pacific Ocean as it clings to a seemingly bare rock.

Finally, reach Carmel Mission and the charming town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, with its winding, tree-lined streets, with innumerable inns, restaurants, and hundreds of unique boutiques and shops. Once a haven for artists, Carmel reflects its artistic heritage in a multitude of galleries. Spend time enjoying a leisurely lunch or checking out the quaint shops and sights. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a jacket. A camera is a must!

Monday, October 16. Departure time: 10:00 a.m. Return to the Marriott hotel at approximately 3:30 p.m. Cost is $78.00 per person. Space is limited, please register early. Tour will be available based on interest.

Technical Tours

ASPE will offer two separate technical tours this year. They will take place on Friday, October 20, 2006. Buses will depart in the early morning and return to Monterey at approximately 8:30 p.m., after stopping at either San Francisco or San Jose International Airports to drop off interested participants.

Because of the nature of the work performed in these laboratories, there are a number of registration requirements and deadlines. Listed below are each of the tour descriptions.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA

The Advanced Light Source (ALS), a division of Berkeley Lab, is a national user facility that generates intense light for scientific and technological research. As one of the world's brightest sources of ultraviolet and soft x-ray beams -- and the world's first third-generation synchrotron light source in its energy range -- the ALS makes previously impossible studies possible. (http://www.als.lbl.gov)

The National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM) is a U.S. Department of Energy user facility providing scientific re-searchers with essential resources for electron beam micro-characterization of materials. NCEM operates as part of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and houses several of the world's most advanced microscopes and tools for microcharacterization. (http://ncem.lbl.gov/frames/center.htm)

The Molecular Foundry is a user facility for Nanoscale Materials, dedicated to supporting research in nanoscience at institutions around the world. (http://foundry.lbl.gov)

The beams are arranged symmetrically in two laser bays, each containing 96 beams. Further, each laser bay contains two "clusters" of 48 beams. (http://www.llnl.gov/nif/project/news_status.html).
