Title   Volumetric Error Mapping Techniques for the NIST M48 Coordinate Measuring Machine
Category   Dimensional Metrology

Content   The NIST Moore M48 coordinate measuring machine has provided NIST with unique and very flexible measurement capabilities for many years. Following the move of the machine into the new Advanced Measurement Laboratory (AML) on the Gaithersburg, MD site, the machine’s state of the art performance was further improved through rigorous volumetric error mapping that takes advantage of the improved control and monitoring of environmental influences. The volumetric error mapping of the NIST M48 CMM follows mostly traditional and historical guidelines however the accuracy requirements of the machine limit the usefulness of commonly use components such as angular and straightness optics. Attention is also given to the effects of the machine warm up behavior and the impact on the mapping and positioning stability. This paper will detail the equipment, optical systems, and procedures used to develop the full 21 parameter error compensation map used on each of NIST M48 CMM’s.
